KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 (Bernama) -- Royal Caribbean Cruises is set to promote its first homeport programme in Port Klang, underscoring the growing importance of the Malaysian market to the global cruise company.
This is a new development from Royal Caribbean which previously had its ships calling at Port Klang as a destination during the Asian season.
Next month, holiday-makers will be able to enjoy the convenience of embarking and disembarking directly at Port Klang for cruises to destinations in Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.
Royal Caribbean's senior vice president, international, Michael Bayley, regional vice president, international, Rama Rebbapragada, and regional director, Asia Pacific, Kelvin Tan, were in Kuala Lumpur to meet government officials and trade agents on the matter.
The company will be offering a series of two-night to five-night cruises from November 2009 to January 2010 as part of its year-round deployment in Asia.
"We recognise the strong potential in Malaysia with its growing affluence, where cruise vacations are being viewed as a fresh alternative holiday option to the traditional weekend getaway," Bayley said at a luncheon meeting here Friday.
"Over the years thousands of Malaysian guests have cruised on our ships. By homeporting in Port Klang, we are going to bring the Royal Caribbean vacation experience to Malaysians closer to home," he said.
"This reflects the growing importance of the Malaysian market for us, which has seen significant growth in recent years," he added.
Let Boon Waat, manager of Gem Travel & Tours, the Royal Caribbean representative in Malaysia, said the brand has become more established in Malaysia by offering luxurious cruises at affordable prices.
"It is also known for its complete onboard entertainment and relaxation, a great way for families to come together and bond," he said.
Royal Caribbean is a global cruise brand with 20 ships currently in service and two under construction.
