Costa Romantica Inaugurates New International Cruise Terminal in Tianjin

Costa Cruises has inaugurated the new international cruise terminal in Tianjin with the first port call of the Costa Romantica - 53,000 gross tonnage and total guest capacity of about 1700.
The opening of the new terminal is a major step forward in the growth in China of Costa Cruises. With the arrival of the Costa Romantica, the Italian Company is further expanding its cruise capacity in China: the Costa Romantica is joining her sister ship Costa Classica, effectively doubling the number of Costa liners deployed in the Far East. In all, the Costa Romantica will be calling at Tianjin 10 times this year. Since its debut in China in 2006, Costa Cruises has invested around 50 million euros in the region and quintupled its cruise capacity, with a total of 93 Chinese port calls in 2010.
In 2010 more than 120,000 cruise passengers are expected to be on a vacation on board a Costa ship in Asia. Costa’s Far Eastern cruises sail from the ports of Shanghai, Tianjin, Hong Kong and Singapore and include stopovers in some of the region’s most popular resorts such as Sanya (China), Halong Bay (Vietnam), Da Nang (Vietnam), Okinawa (Japan), Kagoshima (Japan), Nagasaki (Japan), Fukuoka (Japan) and Cheju (South Korea).
“Costa Cruises is proud that the first call of the Costa Romantica, a symbol of “Italian-made” excellence and elegance worldwide, also marks the inauguration of the new Tianjin cruise terminal,” said Costa Crociere S.p.A. President Gianni Onorato. “The new terminal is a reward for our pioneering investments and work in this part of the world, carried out thanks also to the invaluable support of the Chinese authorities, the ultimate aim being to popularize a new form of vacation in China, a type of holiday that was practically unheard of before in the People’s Republic: namely, cruise vacations.”
China’s third most important city in terms of commerce and industry, Tianjin is currently enjoying rapid expansion in the cruise sector. The local port, called Xingang (New Port), is the most important commercial harbor in China’s northern provinces and also serves as the port of Beijing. The new terminal is located south of the Dongjiang port area and covers some 1.2 million square meters. The area developed in the first stage of the building project comprises 700,000 square meters and can accommodate 6 large cruise ships at a time. The actual terminal building itself has a surface area of 59,000 square meters and can handle up to 4000 cruisers, with a total of 500,000 passengers a year.
The two Costa liners currently operating in China and the Far East – the Costa Classica and Costa Romantica – offer both short cruises, from 4 to 6 days, favored by the local clientele, and longer holidays, from 14 to 16 days, which are more popular with international customers.
In the 2010 summer season the Costa Romantica will be offering 5- and 6-day cruises to South Korea (Cheju and Pusan) and Japan (Fukuoka) with departures from Tianjin and Shanghai. Meanwhile, in June this year the Costa Classica will resume her direct sailings from Hong Kong to Taiwan; then from July she will be operating out of Shanghai on 4 to 6-day cruises to South Korea (Cheju and Pusan) and Japan (Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Nagasaki).
In the 2010/11 winter season, while the Costa Romantica will be positioned in Mauritius on Indian Ocean cruises, the Costa Classica will be offering 14-day cruises from Hong Kong to Vietnam and Thailand, plus a new 14-day itinerary, which can be broken down into two 7- day segments, sailing from Singapore to some of the loveliest destinations in Thailand and Malaysia. In February, May and June 2011 the Costa Classica will once again be deployed on regular scheduled cruises to Taiwan.
In the 2011 summer season the Costa Romantica will be back in Shanghai operating on 4- to 6-day cruises to South Korea (Cheju and Pusan) and Japan (Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Nagasaki). Meanwhile, the Costa Classica will be departing from Tianjin and Shanghai on new 6- to 8-day itineraries to South Korea (Cheju and Pusan) and Japan (Osaka, Fukuoka, Kagoshima and Nagasaki).

Cruise craze for holidaymakers

HOLIDAYMAKERS in Bahrain have been splashing the cash as they ditch city breaks for cruises.
Some travel agents have recorded an 80 per cent increase in bookings compared to the first six months of last year.
The figures come as Bahrain aims to become a hub for cruise tourism following the opening of the Khalifa Bin Salman Port in Hidd.
It welcomed its first luxury passenger liner world cruise ship MV Costa Luminosa in December, which introduced tours of the Gulf.
Travel agents said the US-Norwegian company Royal Caribbean International was leading the sales with Princess Cruises and the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) not far behind.
An average seven-day cruise package costs around BD900 per person, not including flights, but can reach as much as BD8,000.
World Travel Service tours and consultant manager Anitha Ajay Rao believes this is the year for the region's cruise industry to really take off.
"The cruise industry is becoming extremely popular with residents," she said.
"Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruise and NCL are all in the market selling like hot cakes.
"Compared to last year, we've had almost an 80pc increase in sales."
Kanoo International travel holiday manager Zall Koohpaima said the most popular package it had sold was Royal Caribbean International's MS Oasis of the Seas, which starts from the port of Miami, primarily sailing in the waters of the Caribbean.
"I would say that we've sold approximately 3,000 packages and this is about a 20pc increase from last year," he said.
"We've also had a large number of enquiries.
"Royal Caribbean International has cruises all over the world. There are ships that start from Barcelona, Rome, Venice, Amsterdam and more."
Bahrain International Travel leisure manager Samira Hassan reported a 70pc increase in cruise package sales from last summer.
"Our most popular package is the Royal Caribbean Star Cruise," she said.
"It sets sail from Singapore to Phuket, Thailand and Penang, Malaysia and then back to Singapore over a period of two nights."
Ms Hassan said the outbreak of swine flu had affected many cruise package bookings last summer, but that was no longer the case.
"Last July there was a problem with one of the Royal Caribbean ships where over 60 crew members were infected by the H1N1 virus in France," she said.
"But these fears have now been dispelled completely and we find ourselves in the summer of cruising."
Meanwhile, Kanoo International travel has already taken almost 12,000 flight bookings, up 35pc from last year.
Orlando, Florida in the US and Sentosa Island in Singapore are leading the demand because of their family-oriented nature and abundance of children's activities, said officials.
Favourite cities this summer include Kuala Lumpur, London and Istanbul.
The Maldives is also proving popular.
However, bookings to the usually popular destinations of Greece and Thailand have dropped considerably due to political violence and unrest in both countries.
"I think people are trying to stay away from Greece. The country is in financial turmoil and the riots are leading people to book elsewhere," said Ms Hassan.
Instead, she said people were travelling to Ayia Napa in Cyprus to get a taste of similar culture and tradition.
Manama Travel Centre tours manager Pamel Murdoch said Madrid, Spain, was the surprise choice for holiday-goers this year, while Barcelona was also proving popular.

Borneo’s living cave

The stench of ammonia was unmistakable. From the thick forest, the smell assaults you from all directions. Finally you get the whole whiff as you come to a clearing marked by a cluster of stilt houses. Beyond the clearing is the largest chamber of the Gomantong Caves.

Poisonous, long-legged centipedes cling to the wall of the cave
The Gomantong Caves are located in Sabah, at the northern tip of Borneo, the world’s third largest island. The caves have been described by conservationists as "the best-managed edible bird’s nest cave in the world." The caves are also said to have been in use many years ago, supplying the Emperor of China with the delicacy for centuries.

Borneo itself (divided between Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia) is a hothouse of diverse flora and fauna. Generally, caves in tropical climates can host more living things than caves in cooler parts of the world, and the deeper you go, the more interesting the cave fauna becomes.

Two cave complexes make up Gomantong Caves and within them about 20-plus chambers. The two complexes -- Simud Hitam (Black Cave) and Simud Putih (White Cave) -- are where bird’s nests are harvested. The White Cave yields the expensive "white" bird’s nest, so named because the nests are free of the droppings and debris that characterize the "black" bird’s nest.

The Black Cave is about 30 meters wide and approximately 100 meters tall. It is the more accessible of the two cave complexes and can readily be visited from ground level. An elevated, circular wooden walkway has been built along the wall of the cave in order to let visitors observe the cave and watch the harvesting of the nests.

The curious can witness the harvesting between February and April, and again between July and September, when the eggs would have hatched and the nests abandoned. On off seasons, the show turns to the cave and its fauna.

Gomantong Cave is clearly a living cave. Guano (bat droppings) is commonly harvested and sold as fertilizer. Not so here. The guano has been left uncollected on the cave floor and now resembles a black undulating hill. This is to let the natural cycle of cave life go on uninterrupted by humans.

Bats inhabit the cave by day, leaving it en masse at dusk to feed on fruits and insects in the forest. Taking their place at night are swiftlets who build their precious nests on the nooks and crannies of the cave’s roof.

Because the guano has been left to accumulate, all manner of bugs and insects, worms and moths, flies and beetles, inhabit the living floor.

Cockroaches, shiny and plump, cling to the railing of the walkway. In the darker parts of the cave, they are so thick they resemble some bizarre wall treatment of clustered grapes. On the cave floor, sprouting from the mountain of guano on which they feed, are meter-long millipedes that resemble spaghetti with feet.

Shine your light at the cave walls and eye-level with you are five-inch centipedes, with legs that are just as long. Remember how they tell you that you shouldn’t fear big scorpions because it’s the small ones that are deadly? No such thing here. These long-legged centipedes (Thereuopoda sp., to be exact) are as deadly as they look. One sting from them, said our guide Rudy, and off to the hospital you go.

In the farthest corner of the Black Cave, we hear a faint but persistent meowing. A cat, an orange tabby, screams at us but fails to wake her master, who is fast asleep on the makeshift shed. Feral cats have been known to reside in caves, though this particular one seems to be kept as a companion by the human.

Yes, there are people who live inside this cave. For a share of the earnings, they take shifts guarding the precious birds’ nests. These are also the same people who perform daring acts of balancing on the unique rope-and-ladder system used to harvest the birds’ nests.

We are halfway through the circular boardwalk when we are met by fellow visitors, Europeans from the sound of their accents, hurrying to cut short their tour. One of them pointed to the umbrella our guide had given us before entering the cave and said, "Good idea!"

It seems that in addition to risking a guano facial, one also might be showered with the various mites, ticks and fleas that could fall from the bats sleeping overhead. That being said, did I mention that we each paid RM30 (about P420) to enter the caves?

The cave rises to nearly 100 meters. Here, a portion of the cave roof has collapsed.
The point is, tourism is not the point. The Gomantong Caves produced over three tons of bird’s nest for Malaysia last year. In nearby Sandakan town, a kilo of bird’s nest goes for RM7,000. Online, a kilo of white bird’s nest sells for $1,700. Do the math and you will probably understand why the folks running the Gomantong Cave Visitor Center probably do not mind the fact that this Fear Factor experience might be a hard sell to the average tourist.

We exit the Black Cave and feel that our footwear had somehow grown heavier. "I think I stepped on something," my companion said, not without a bit of amusement. As we proceed to rub clean our shoes against a thick patch of grass in the clearing, we hear something crash from the trees.

The stream that runs near Gomantong Cave is connected to the famous Kinabatangan River and is just south of the orangutan reserve at Sepilok. Not surprisingly, the orangutans, macaques and countless hawks, serpent eagles and kingfishers that inhabit the nearby river and forest easily make the trip to these parts. Consequently, the 15-minute walk from the Visitor Center to the caves can be highlighted by the shuffle of macaques playfully swinging from the tree branches.

The crash that we just heard was a 200-lb male orangutan falling from his perch on the trees. What made him fall so clumsily was his slow but relentless pursuit of a female, now looking back at him and probably laughing at the misfortune of her suitor. She coyly proceeds to lead the male in this canopy courtship and the pair disappear into the thick foliage leading to the hill above the cave entrance.

"Now there’s something you don’t see everyday," my companion said.

I couldn’t agree more.

Malaysian Beach Ranked in Top 10 Travel and Real Estate

June 23, 2010 - Kuala Lampur, Malaysia - Reported by Elite Traveler, the Private Jet Lifestyle Magazine

Pulau Perhentian is one of the world's most "idyllic, sun-kissed refuges," according to Lonely Planet, the world's largest travel guide firm.

Sapphire blue waters, white sand beaches, jungle trekking, diving, and an all time favorite-sun bathing-these are just a few things to be found and experienced at Pulau Perhentian in Malaysia. Lonely Planet ranked this beautiful beach as the fifth "Best Beach to Swing a Hammock" in its 1000 Ultimate Experiences for 2010.

Pulau Perhentian, meaning 'stopover island,' consists of two islands: Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau Perhentian Kecil. "The palm-fringed beaches of the Perhentian Islands, covered in tropical rainforest, are about as natural as they come: calm, hassle-free and with virtually no signs of commercialization," says Lonely Planet.

Of the two islands, Pulau Perhentian Kecil is geared towards backpackers where one will find a wide range of budget options for both food and accommodation. Pulau Perhentian Besar, on the other hand, is more developed and offers luxurious facilities.

Located just off the edge of the Pulau Redang Marine Park, Perhentian's coral-fringed waters have excellent underwater seascapes for snorkeling and scuba diving. Arrangements can also be made for island cruises, and boats can be hired to explore private bays and secluded coves.

Two Cunard Line ships to go around the world in 2012

Cunard today announced plans for two ambitious world cruises to take place in 2012, continuing a long tradition of globe-circling itineraries.
The historic line says its newest ship, the soon-to-debut Queen Elizabeth, will sail a 107-day voyage out of Southampton, England that will completely circumnavigate the globe, and the Queen Mary 2 will sail from Southampton to Australia and back on a circular routing.
The Queen Elizabeth sailing will be the ship's second around-the-world trip (it's also circumnavigating the globe in early 2011 after debuting later this year). The itinerary will take the ship westbound starting with a sailing across the Atlantic, passage through the Panama Canal and visit to the West Coast of the USA. From there the ship heads to the South Pacific, New Zealand, Australia and such Asian countries as Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand before continuing on to the Middle East and Europe.
Fares start at $20,995 per person.

As in the past, passengers also can buy segments of the world cruise that range from 12 to 24 days and start at $2,775 per person.
The Queen Mary 2's world voyage, while not a complete circumnavigation of the world, will include stops on four continents. The ship will head from Southampton to Africa, where it will make a maiden call to Namibia, among other stops. From there it will sail to Australia, where it will completely circumnavigate the continent before heading to multiple calls in Asia.
Among the highlights of several Asia calls: A first visit to Hiroshima, Japan.
After Asia, the Queen Mary 2 will turn back westward towards the Middle East for a visit to Dubai and a passage through the Suez Canal to Europe. The voyage -- the ship's fifth world cruise -- ends back in Southampton.
Fares for the Queen Mary 2 trip start at $20,995 per person, with 15- to 22-day segments available starting at $2,995 per person.
